What is a Prayer Chaplain?

As director of Pastoral Care I am often asked the question “What is the difference between a Prayer Chaplain and someone who is in the prayer ministry?”  The simplest answer is that a Prayer Chaplain prays with people and a prayer team member prays for people.  While both Prayer Chaplains and prayer ministry members pray for people, Prayer Chaplains have gone through many hours of training to learn “how” to pray with others.  Why go through training?   Doesn’t everyone know how to pray? Although this is true, a prayer chaplain has learned to examine his/her own inner life in order to be aware of personal issues, or vulnerabilities that might interfere with the purity of praying with you.
